NAHRO Winter Conference
As the President of the NORCAL/Nevada Chapter, I want to welcome all of you to the 2012 NORCAL/Nevada NAHRO Winter Conference. I would also like to thank all of you who attended last year’s Winter Conference held in Napa, California. The conference was a great success with record turnout with over twenty-eight (28) housing agency’s being represented.
It is our goal for the 2012 Winter Conference to continue this positive trend by providing a conference for housing professionals with informative sessions to exchange ideas, develop strategies, and work in partnership with other local housing agency’s and officials to ensure that affordable housing which is decent, safe and sanitary is within reach of all residents of the communities we serve.
The House and Senate continue to work on the economic recovery, creating jobs and strengthening our weak economy. In 2009 and 2010, our industry saw several areas where additional funds were provided enabling housing authorities as well as non-profits to acquire, construct and rehabilitate affordable housing; we saw additional funding for the Section 8 project-based program and the CDBG program; funding for the public housing capital fund to assist with energy improvements; homeless prevention funds; Neighborhood Stabilization Funds to redevelop foreclosed or abandoned homes, and the list goes on.
I encourage you all to advocate continued investment of our programs. It is a hopeful time for our industry as we work with our partners and elected officials to promote the needs of housing for our communities. It is the time for our industry to “Power Up and Surge Ahead!”
The 2012 Winter Conference has so much to offer, but as always, the networking opportunities and the relationships we establish are two of the most valuable tools we take with us when we leave here. Please take the time to visit with your fellow NAHRO colleagues, ask questions of our vendors and sponsors, talk with our knowledgeable speakers, provide your input and ideas to your Board Members and thank our Member Services Committee for all of their volunteer time and effort to make this a great experience for all of you.
